Knowing God, Part 3

Text: 1 John 2:3-11

Summary: In 1 John 2:3-11, John refutes three false claims (vv. 4, 6, 9) made by the secessionists (2:19) to know God while not keeping His commandments. By refuting the false claims of the secessionists, John assures his "little children" (2:1) in the faith that they indeed know God and have eternal life (see 1 John 2:12-14; 5:13, 20).

Outline:

I. The claim to know God while not keeping His commandments. vv. 3-5a

II. The claim to abide in God while not walking as Christ walked. vv. 5b-8

What does it mean that we are “in Him” and “abide in Him?”

How do we come to “abide in Him?”
