Do You Not Know?

Part 6

Text: 1 Cor. 6:9-20

Introduction/Review:

I.     Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? vv. 9-11

II.    Do you not know that your bodies belong to Christ because they are destined for resurrection? vv. 12-14

“It is a base thing to prostitute our body to earthly pollutions, while it is destined to be a partaker along with Christ of a blessed immortality and of the heavenly glory” (1 Corinthians, p. 216). Lesson:

How does Paul seek to confront the problem of sexual immorality in the Corinthian church?

What can we learn from Paul’s approach in order to combat this ever-present moral dilemma in our own day?

“I am not my own, but belong with body and soul, both in life and in death, to my faithful Saviour Jesus Christ…” (Heidelberg Catechism, Q. 1).

“Our legal union with Christ entitles us to all that Christ did for us as He acted in our place, as our substitute. Our vital union with Christ is the means by which He works in us by the Holy Spirit. The legal union refers to His objective work outside of us that is credited to us through faith. The vital union refers to His subjective work in us, which is also realized through faith as we rely on His Spirit to work in and through us” (Jerry Bridges, The Gospel For Real Life, p. 39).

Reflection:

“…while God the Father has united us to his Son, what wickedness there would be in tearing away our body from that sacred connection, and giving it over to things unworthy of Christ,” (John Calvin, 1 Corinthians, p. 216).
