Pray This Way:

The Divine Pattern of Righteous Prayer

Part 1

 Text: Matthew 6:5-15

Introduction:

The problem with the exemplary approach to prayer:

1.  The exemplary approach lifts biblical or biographical examples of out their historical context.

2. The exemplary approach to sanctification, which includes the believer’s prayer life, is based on Pelagianism.

Lesson:

 I.  Jesus Condemns Unrighteous Prayer. 6:5-8

    A.  Pompous prayer, vv. 5-6

    B.  Purposeless prayer, vv. 7-8

II.    Jesus Commends Righteous Prayer, 6:9-13

Reflection:

In brief, the Lord’s Prayer will teach us how to avoid legalism (unrighteous prayer) and how to grow in genuine prayer (righteous prayer) by rooting us in the gospel of grace and guiding us by the wisdom of God’s law.
